About the workshops:
This program is designed to
be a comprehensive drought risk education program conducted through a
series of workshops for Nebraska farmers and ranchers. To assist in developing
relevant workshop materials, a series of listening
forums were held across the State of Nebraska in January/February
of 2003. During these forums, producers, agribusiness representatives,
and other stakeholders came together to discuss their drought concerns
and information needs. The perspectives gained from the listening forums
were used to develop materials on farm/ranch drought risk analysis, mitigation,
and management that will be presented in the workshops.
Workshop curriculum:
- Introduce basic concepts
about droughts, climatic variability, and risks associated with agricultural
production across different (rainfed, irrigated, mixed, and rangeland)
production regions of Nebraska and surrounding states.
- Expose producers to web-based
climate products, forecasts, drought analysis tools, and crop insurance
programs that help producers with their decision-making process and
in designing farm-level drought mitigation strategies.
- Relate drought information
and forecast products to the potential for alternative or new crops
and ranching strategies.
- Bring together the sustainable
agricultural community, the traditional agronomic commodity groups,
emergine new/alternative groups, such as the Nebraska Winery and Grape
Growers Association, agricultural consultants, seed company ales, marketing,
and distributors, and nursery/ornamental producers to learn more about
their climate information and insurance needs under the highly variable
climates of Nebraska and the Great Plains.
- Clarify the methodologies
in risk assessment (high/low risk areas), the actuarial process, and
criteria used in rate-setting to encourage greater participation in
crop insurance programs and recognize the concept of drought mitigation
plans at the farm scale.
