DroughtScape: Sharing institutional knowledge

October 31, 2017

We’ve just released the latest edition of DroughtScape. In the third quarter of 2017, we saw drought continue to spread through the northern Great Plains. The continued dryness took a toll on crops, livestock and water supplies, and submissions to the Drought Impact Reporter took off.

Working with international groups has been a part of our focus since our inception. This quarter was no different; between August and October, we met with three separate international groups that were seeking information on modelling what the National Drought Mitigation Center is for the United States. Read those stories:

·         Mapping a drought planning process for Korea

·         Drought forecasting: Integrating dragonflies with the Digital Age

·         Cultivating drought preparedness in South Africa

Also in this edition, we announce with SNAPP and the U.S. Geological Survey a new definition of drought — ecological drought — which could lead to better preparation and reduced vulnerability to drought.
