Managing Drought Risk on the Ranch

Inventory and Monitor Precipitation

Inventory:  Average Precipitation and Historical Drought Severity

Understanding how often drought has occurred in your area in the past, how long past droughts have lasted, and how severe those droughts have been will help you prepare for future droughts.  This section tells you how to gather historical climate data and use it to develop your drought plan.

Monitor:  Recent Precipitation and Drought

Monitoring precipitation and drought conditions will help you make decisions about stocking rates, buying feed, weaning, and marketing in a timely and proactive manner.  This section will link you to the best sites for monitoring current conditions and weather outlooks.
